TOPIC: GME - another window on the world

GME - another window on the world 5 months, 1 week ago #94

It's great to get positive feedback from parents about Gaelic when talking to them in the chatroom, for example, a parent recently said this:-

"The other thing you can notice when a child is bilingual is about the culture that comes to him naturally. My (Primary 3) child is always asking me what language do people speak in China for example? Or about continents, etc. and this is because he understands more than other kids that there are different people, different cultures in countries all over the world ....."
" he does all his work ok, and is doing very well with the languages. From last year he started reading in english himself, nobody was teaching him... I was in tears when I realised that ..."

Suggestion - bilingualism helps children's cognitive development as well as awareness about cultural diversity ...

Any comments?

My son is 3 1/2 yr old has gone to gaelic playgroup and is currently attending our local GM unit for nursery. Although he only goes one day a week and get minimal gaelic (my conversational gaelic has long deserted me) he is able to do show and tell with the group and is very good at following direction. He can confidently sing (albeit to himself) in gaelic all the songs he learnt as a toddler. I think he is confident with language and has showed this while visiting the library he got a french/english story book out for me to read to him at night. Would he listen to the story in english, of course not! I had to struggle through this book numerous times in my rusty school french and he loved every minute. I am still deciding if he was enjoying the story or my discomfort. He is not apprehensive in any way when he hears another language he seems to decihper it in his own wee way, he may hear similarities I am missing. In my opinion gaelic medium can only be good.

Mòran taing giraffe782 - it's very rewarding to hear about your child's success with language and it sounds as if he is already multilingual!
