Does GME honestly work?

The best answer to this question is to be found in the figures. Gaelic-medium education is a relatively new phenomenon in Scotland as a whole, and very new in many authorities. Yet in 2010-11 there were about 2,000 pre-school children and 2,500 primary pupils are being educated through the medium of Gaelic. Their parents want GME because they see that it adds value to their children’s educational experience – in other words, it works.

In their June 2011 publication, Scotland’s HMIE (Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Education)  has recommended written national guidance for Gaelic-medium education which defines best practice in delivering Gaelic-medium provision, endorsing its value as a model for the delivery other languages:-

**“It could underpin the potential Scotland has to become an international model of best practice in the promotion of minority language communities across Europe.”
