About Gaelic Medium

Fàilte!

Welcome to Gaelic4Parents.com, the website for parents and children interested and involved in Gaelic education. Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) is a Celtic language native to Scotland and Gaelic medium education is seen as the best hope for reversing its decline.

Gaelic medium education (Foghlam tro Mheadhan na Gàidhlig) or GME for short, is a system in Scotland allowing pupils to be educated primarily through the medium of Gaelic with English being taught as the secondary language. Being immersed in the language is the best way of achieving or maintaining fluency so in the Early Years children are taught only in Gaelic with English language being introduced gradually in later years of primary schooling. Further information about GME is available here.

This site was set up by Stòrlann, the National Gaelic Education Resource Agency in 2006 in order to provide information and support to parents of children in Gaelic medium education and to those considering GME for their child. Some responses to questions frequently asked by parents considering Gaelic education are available in the FAQ.

Much research has been done in recent years on the benefits of bilingualism in children’s development and their future. The most recent research project (commissioned by Bòrd na Gàidhlig from Edinburgh University and published in Sept 2010) concluded that people chose GME because of its educational gain and because they valued the language as part of their cultural identity. produced to Gaelic education with the latest reports. Further information on the benefits of bilingualism, including findings from a report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Schools (June 2011) can be accessed on Benefits of GME
